Housing Crisis & Homelessness Resources in Chatham County
This list is only meant to provide information and may not be inclusive of all housing assistance options available to you. It does not guarantee eligibility or funding, and there may be a waitlist for programs listed. Service providers are working diligently with many households to end their housing crises, but resources are limited.
There are no emergency shelters in Chatham County. There may be availability in emergency shelters outside of Chatham: Alamance, Durham, Lee, Moore and Orange and Wake counties.

If you are behind on your rent, mortgage, and utilities and/or have been served an eviction notice:
Salvation Army can only pay for past due bills. It cannot pay for current or future bills. Salvation Army also has a limited supply of food and household items on hand to help lower the overall cost of living for those experiencing a crisis.

EHAP can provide rental assistance but cannot help with mortgages or utilities. Households must have a sustainable income to be eligible for assistance. Households are ineligible if they have ever received help from EHAP before.

If you are experiencing homelessness (for example, you are or are about to be couch surfing, living out of your car, or living in a tent):
The following agencies can help you resolve and possibly assess your current situation. Depending on your assessment results, you may be eligible for a referral to programs that help find and pay for housing.

Salvation Army also offers the Pathway to Success program, a long-term case management and mentoring program for those in imminent danger of eviction or who are in a chronic housing crisis situation.

Vaya Health services is for Medicaid beneficiaries with serious mental illness, serious emotional disturbance, severe substance use disorder, intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD), or a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
State-Funded Services are for qualifying NC residents with no insurance, or not enough insurance. Offered are Mental Health Services, Substance Use Recovery Services, Intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) services, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) services. All of Second Bloom’s services – legal advocacy, housing and shelter, and therapy and support group – are free and confidential. Second Bloom offers a 24/7 helpline that is staffed by trauma-informed volunteers and staff. Second Bloom accepts walk-ins during regular business hours.
