The 2017 United Way Build a Backpack school supply drive was a huge success thanks to the support of local businesses, churches and community members. The drive collected backpacks, notebooks, binders, paper, pencils, crayons and other school supplies. Almost 300 backpacks were donated this year, making it the most successful drive yet! Supplies were distributed to school children around the county through Chatham County Department of Social Services Foster Care Program, Communities In Schools and the Chatham County Schools’ Basic Needs Program.
Area businesses and churches that collected school supplies for the drive include: 3M, Briar Chapel, Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church, Chapel Ridge, Chatham County DSS, David Weekley Homes, Eastern Chatham Senior Center, Governors Club, Pittsboro Presbyterian Church, Realty World Carolina Properties, Virginia Cross Elementary School, Siler City and Chapel Hill Walmarts and the Western Chatham Senior Center.
